Island Outlet Outage - AFCI next?

As I stated earlier in the thread, IMHO receptacles should be permitted on the side of the island to feed the countertop, however some trim detail should be required that captures the cord and prevents it from being snagged/grabbed. I could imagine some sort of decorative molding that creates a channel for the cord.

I could imagine some sort of universe where the NEC would take its declaration that it is not a design manual to heart. There are enough places in the code where it oversteps this boundary. They don't need to start telling people how to build a cabinet.

Wouldn't that be nice. I don't understand why we cannot rely on adults to not use the side mounted receptacle if there is a potential hazard. Also the new in countertop pop-up can be mounted right at the edge of the counter so a cord still can hang down.

because in this modern world, no one is responsible for their own actions....it is always some one else's fault

There is a general concept of 'not placing a stumbling block in front of a blind person'.

The danger presented by receptacles in the side of islands is not commonly understood. You can call it common sense, but I'm pretty safety conscious and well read, and was blind to the issue prior to reading this thread.

Now that the issue is known, IMHO it should be dealt with in some way. Maybe not a code change, but something. My capitalist half wants to market decorative bridle rings so that the ad educated people about the danger....

It's a sad state but we did at one point use a pendant drop as both a light and a receptacle 120 years ago. I wish people were smarter but my 4 year old isn't smart enough not to pull something on himself, so I understand the end of the island outlet on the side. Doesn't mean we should protect stupid I wish they only add the mandate to protect "children and mentalu challenged adults who require constant supervision" this might clear things up a bit on the protect stupid side.
