That's quite alright...sometimes I have to stop, pull out all of the darts, and put them back where I found them, so I can breathe

always looking for the negative...never have anything good to say....

What do you mean by nothing good to say? I think this may be a smart business decision for the plumber. He giving away something that probably won't cost him much at all and it's going to look like a really generous jesture. The homeowner will be happy and keep giving him jobs where he can make good money. Sounds like he is looking at the longer term business relationship ( more than just collecting the max on one little job).

The fact that this may also have tax benefits will never be mentioned but will be appreciated. Even really honest people are not stupid when it comes to taxes.

Most contractors are against giving work away for the promise of future work which normally never pans out but if you have a customer that's already delivered on the goods there is nothing wrong with a magnanimous jesture on your part, especially if it doesn't cost very much. Just think what a jesture like this can do for his reputation in a small community.

I admit, its hard to tell sometimes by the comments that are made, when they are laced with sarcasim...If Im wrong, I apologize......But just remember if you going to dish it out you should be able to take it back....

not a problem...I fully agree, but this plumber, I assure you, doesnt think that deep, I believe he's trying to help her, while Im sure, he thinks he looks good out of the deal. Beyond that?.....I dont think so

Growler, I agree with what your saying but this particular trench is no small thing, this trench is 650 FEET Long.

Even with a ditch witch it will take almost a full day. What does a ditch witch do in good ground ? maybe 3 or 4 feet per minute ? Your looking at 5 + hours even in the best conditions. We are also assuming he has a machine on site.

Don't get me wrong, I have been known to do a small job or 2 for free for good customer that has generated good consistent referrals but this 650' trench deal is a little over and beyond what I can see anybody doing.

Maybe? He owes her, or, maybe he was a big bird hunting friend with the husband? which now that I think about it, is highly possible....while I was out there the other day, there was a beautifull bird dog working some quail, stirring them up then going on point... out in the pasture and it was kinda sad thinking about the husband passing, and I know the plumber is a hunter also....we have no idea, only speculation, and assumption. I just like to give folks the benifiet of the doubt, makes life much easier and pleasant

I apreciate all the help. The gate man called today and said he will most likely go with a 1hp AND he said it 650ft not 800.....geez Its probably a dual voltage motor, so I'll probably go with 240v with a neutral and egc as they she may want to add some lighting at later date. Then the customer also called today and stated that her plumber is going to do the trenching for free. I think I should install a surge protector or perhaps a lighting arrestor down there as well.

So with that 1hp and 650ft what does your vd calculator say?

With #6 at 650' will do 10 amps with a 3%vd
#8 will only give you 6.8 amps with 3%vd
All based on 240v using copper conductors

Thanks, that was generous of you...I was thinking about estimating this thing two ways....one being the "Cheap way" with URD thrown in the ditch  , and then the other being in PVC done right. If I do that, She's a lady, she'll take the cheap route for sure....so I dont know...wouldnt be all that reliable down the road, and hard to repair. To do it right two pipes one for power and one for low voltage and ample pull points. The gate man is doing a wireless remote but wants to put in a spare pipe for future.

I was going to say, where's the com pipe...

Mule, we understand... what's a book say, it'll takes long they you thought, it'll be hard than you thought and anything that can happen will... or was that a phrase from Murphy ...

I frankly and don't care about other peoples business, as long as someone
will work with me in my persuits of a days work, I'll work with them.
