I used these for years.

Klien HD2000-9NE

Until I was given the chance to try a pair of Ideal 35-3012

Broken in, right out of the package. After about a year, I like them as much, if not more, than Klien's.

Knipex

Knipex

I've been using Knipex pliers, dykes and adjustable wrenches for about two years now (the same ones) and will never go back to Kleins.

Since someone asked for a link, here it is. The traditional style linemans from Knipex are called "New England Style Linemans":

1000V insulated handles: http://chadstoolbox.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=8198

"Ergo" insulated handles: http://chadstoolbox.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=7849

I actually prefer the other style of jaw which can grip a 3/4" EMT and works great for a lot of nuts. I don't really use them for hammering or stripping, and if there's any doubt about a line being energized, I cut with a pair of $15 wire strippers. The grooves in the grip have held up way better than any Kleins I've ever owned.

Lineman's?

Lineman's?

What are lineman's? There Kliens!!:D "hand me my Kliens"..Channel locks are plumber's pliers! I've tried Ideals, they seem to not have the full leverage that Kliens have! Look at the pictures above to see that! I bet this thread goes way over a hundred!!

I'm unable to vote because my linesmans experience is only with kliens. 20 years ago my first boss said get yourself a pair and I did. So i can tell you that I use Kliens, but have nothing to compare it to.

Then Kliens are obviously your preference.

...the ones in my aprrentice's tool pouch if I'm unsure if I'm cutting live.

..hey, you gotta be sure, right?

For those of you at home..never work on live cicuits.

That's hilarious. I learned that lesson the hard way when I was an apprentice.

wow you guys must not work as hard as we do here in FL. New grips? baaa the whole tool doesnt last long enough for that. 6 months max mine are worn to wobbliness. they are called a nine in one also. or they e=used to be. the metal in the new kleins isnt what it once was but ive tried all the rest and stick with the best.

I always get a chuckle out of guys when they struggle pulling [steel] fish tape with their hands and/or resort to their Kleinsmen when the reel is right beside them.

I agree...by far the best way to pull the fish tape is with the fish tape reel itself.

What is a 'reel'? ;)

We don't bother with reels for snakes on construction sites.

We don't permit the use of fish tapes that are not in their reel.

I guess I would not last long.
Maybe I need a picture...?

When you say "reel", what exactly are you referring to? That may sound stupid, but I am under the distinct impression the words being thrown around mean something different to other people.

To me, the "reel" is the holder the fish tape comes in. To try to pull a run using it would usually result in the fish getting embedded and jammed in lower levels internally in the reel, and is to be avoided, at least in my experience.

The idea of using a fish without a "reel" would be odd unless I drove a semi with a 53' trailer to work, to pitch the thing in when I was done with it.

So I get the distinct impression I'm missing something...
