Re: NEC Poster's!! Can I see what you look like too?

Hi everyone,

My thanks to Mike Holt for providing a great bulletin board where we can learn and share our electrical experiences. This site is a great benefit to the electrical community!

I started in the building trades as a carpenter's helper while still in high school. After high school, I enlisted in the Marines and attended aviation electronics school.

I returned to civilian life and became employed in the sheet metal/HVAC trade. With the ever increasing demands for licensing tradesmen, I attended electrical code classes sponsored in-part by the local power company. Shortly thereafter, I passed my licensing requirements.

The demand was high and the supply was low for electrical contractors and I struck out on my own for several years. The economy was slow and children needed to be fed, so I became an employee once more, this time for an electrical contracting company.

I enjoy the challenge of the NEC? and it's application. For me, it is a never ending learning experience that I look forward to and welcome.

It's kind of like the chase is more rewarding than the conclusion of the event.

I also own and operate a web hosting and design company that started off as a hobby. It is a small company and growing. The best part is, I think it's fun!

Thanks,
Dave Nix

I couldn't agree more, except the receptacle has the ground up instead of down!!! :D :D :D

Greetings!!!
My name is Ryan Jackson, I am a combination inspector for Draper city, Utah. I am 25 years old and have a wife of four years, a three year old daughter and a 4 month old son. I am currently certified as a commercial building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspector, also a residential building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical inspector, and a building plans examiner, all through ICBO/ICC. I plan to be certified as an electrical plans examiner in a few weeks. I started as a residentail framer when I was 15 years old began doing commercial electrical work when I was 18 and could be legally licensed by the state.
I am currently on the board of directors for the Utah chapter of IAEI.
My hobbies include brewing beer and mead, and practicing full contact Kung fu and karate.
If anyone out there needs a building code question answered you could probably do worse, so send me a private message and I'll try to help you out with it.
Heres me doing what inspectors in my area do best! :D

I was told I needed to work on my hook, so now I golf left-handed, but I have a slice!!! :D
Kinda like what Yogi Berra used to say about Mickey Mantle: "...he can use his left or his right. He's naturally amphibious!"

Its actually a very old Theater built in the 30's. That was their HVAC system :) We designed the new McQuay 120 Ton rooftop packaged unit that replaced this very old one. Its an amonia chiller and I was standing in the huge condensor. The air handlng unit, was a large motor with about a 6inch leather belt attached to it. A nice safety hazard now a days, but i guess not back then.

Re: NEC Poster's!! Can I see what you look like too?

It's a long story, but after retiring from science teaching in HS and JHS I was asked by a friend to find out why her guests were getting shocked by an outdoor shower. I succeeded and that lead to an involvement with trouble-shooting and also to the concern about magnetic fields and health.

My amateur investigations of fields from power lines then lead to surveys in buildings. This resulted in finding that most high magnetic fields were from building wiring. This lead to intense study of the NEC in which I found that all these fields were due to either Code violations or grounding to water pipes.

Next I decided I could design a gaussmeter to sell for less than I had to pay. By dumb luck (which I like to think of as angelic help) and lots of trial and error, I succeeded and sold my MSI meters for 9 years before selling out.

I continued EMF consulting and since there was no book on the subject I decided to write one (1995). Then followed a video as requested by the Cal Health Dept for use by CA schools. Mike Holt liked my book and video, and so eventually I found myself on this forum. I am working on a revised edition since the first edition is nearly sold out.

I'll try sending a pic of what I look like standing out waiting to be hit by lightning.

Couln't send the pic; intercepted by internet security since it ends in eml which might mean a virus was attached. Have no other, so anyone with Mike Holt's 2-volume Grounding and Bonding video: I'm the old guy talking about EMFs at the end of Vol. 1.

Correct me if I'm wrong but in my town you'd get the book thrown at you for that BEAUTIFUL piece of electric artwork! Don't get me wrong, it's very meticulous and I tip my hat to you from an aestihic point of view.

My rant: I don't like to see unprotected NM within my reach. I always protect exposed and reachable NM from damage. I don't have my code book yet but it might be 336-6b (1999) or 334.15B (2002) according to some web links I found.

Or, is this Canadian rules? Or farm exemption? I'm not being flippant. Is there a different standard applied here? In my area according to standard trade practices exposed Romex within reach should be covered or otherwise protected. I will cite code soon enough. Again, it is a beautiful job!

Wayne,
Please cite the section that you think has been violated in the installation.
