I am taking the exam in NJ in April if the Board can get to my application. I have mike Holt's exam prep. Is anyone in Central Jersey in the same boat? If so contact me. Also how many months do you think you need to study

It took me four months, I did Mike's book cover to cover., The most important info in his book is in the first chapter, about how to take tests, read it. It could make the difference.
Other advice, stay at the hotel the night before.

Ditto. Four Months at least. And dont sit next to a guy that sighs every five minutes. And dont plan on using you own book. Dont forget to familiarize your self with the NJ referance manual. Gook luck.

I use tom henry calculation book 2008 the book shows you most of the calculations for the test It was pretty helpful. I would also get a book on grounding and bonding

Although I am in NY, I teach for the NJ test. I have guys from NYC and the area I am in who train with me.
NJ does not allow one to take his/her own NEC into the test.
The test is multiple parts and is not strictly a code test. Be prepared to be there all day.
Good Luck.

P.S.
Don't get hung up on studying too much of your time with calculations, it is only a small portion of the test.

Good point. Since all of the questions are weighted the same don't get hung up on doing a load calculation for a 16 unit apartment building when you could be looking up answers to simpler questions in the code book.

I didn't take any prep course, I did the electrical test in 2 1/2 hours got a 89, I felt the alarm and law tests were harder. Like Pierre said the test will have questions you'll have to just know, like on motor connections, transformer connections, motor controls... took the test in 2005 there wasn't any complete load calcs. on the test, they did ask for pieces of them. In addition to Mike's book I studied the fire alarm book, theory books, anything else I could get my hands on. Studied atleast 3-4 hours a night.

I took the NJ exam in October 2008 and passed without taking any prep courses. I got an electrician exam studybook, NFPA 72 Alarm Code book, and the NJ Contractor book. I simply read the Alarm Code book & NJ Contractor Book- just familized myself with the different sections for fast reference during the exam. And spent about an hour or two each night studying with the electrical exam book.
Remember you don't have to know all the answers, just where to find them since you have the Code book and you can use your own NFPA72 & NJ Contractor book as a reference on the exam.
Good Luck!;)

I submitted my paperwork to the state in person back in November. I understand the board of examiners met on December 3rd and on January 7th yet I still haven't gotten an approval or anything from them in the mail. Is this normal? Any info is appreciated.

I also had my paperwork submitted in time for the Dec. 3rd meeting and I have not received anything yet either. I'm going to call them on Monday and see when I can expect my license.:-?

Thanks for the reply. Somehow I feel relieved. Thought maybe they lost the application, or misplaced it, anything. I'm going to be a very happy person when it does come.

I'm probably going to be doing Ben Shedlock's class for prep. I have 19 years in the trade and I'm just finishing up my 16th class at Vo-Tech so i'm as ready as I'll ever be.

I'm using mike dvd's which i find great so far. I'm worried I am studying 2008 and if test is on 2005 I'll have a harder time finding things in the 2005 code book. Anyone know which year the code is on for April test.
