How many outlets can you put on a residential branch circuit?

There have been proposals in the past to place a limit on the number of receptacles on a residential circuit, but they have all been rejected. Not sure what substantiation would sway the CMP to accept a proposal (Public Input) that placed a limit on the number of receptacles.
