Pulling Tension on Cat-5

What is the max pulling tension for communications cables, and where is it stated?

Yes, it is found in the manufacturers spec sheet. Most manufacturers of Cat.5 will state 25 lbs. max pulling tension but I used Cat.5 recently that I could swear max. pulling tension was 15 lbs. but I dont remember the manufacturer.

I checked the data sheets for a couple of Belden Cat 5 cables - they range from 25 to 40 pounds depending on the construction.

Take a look in ANSI/TIA/EIA 568 B ....it is 25 lbs.

That's great, but why didn't you just turn and tell me that?

If it's a bundle, the pulling tension is 80% of the sum of the individual cables. Hence, a bundle of 4 cables would have a pulling tension of 80lbs, and so on.

Take a look in ANSI/TIA/EIA 568 B ....it is 25 lbs.

And it is my understanding that the permitted pulling force in that document does not go up as you add cables. It is 25 pounds max for one cable and does not go up as you add cables to the pull. That is the document does not permit a pulling force of 250 pounds for a bundle of 10 cables.

that is correct Don. no matter how many cables you have the max pulling tension is 25 lbs.
