Using much 12/2/2 NM cable?

This wire would be useful for the bath fan/light/heat since all conductors would be contained within the same cable. :) Oops, I notice this has already been pointed out.
Ohhhh, that's what H/V/L stands for.

Over the years, I have probably observed 75-80% of r/w that had either two 12/2's or a 12/2 and a 12/3 going up to the H/V/L. Some of the better electricians around here would use smurf tube and pull single conductor thhn from the switch bank to the fixture, while the others would pull two cables.....Nice to see this stuff around. :)

Notice the two neutrals... hence no 2 pole breakers required

Wait a couple of code cycles. Once a diy or two gets bit from the live circuit in the cable cause they didn't know what they are doing the code panels will start requiring 2 pole breakers cause they love handymen so much...

We had 14-4 and 12-4 here for a while. Stuff was higher than two rolls of two wire. So, the warehouses stopped carrying them. I'm going to check and see if they have begun to carry them again.

Well it is pretty clear no matter what the product, situation, method of doing things, etc, there will be someone who argues against it regardless of how good the idea actually is.

Anyway, I use the 2/2 wire all the time. It IS a time and labor saver and I have yet to find a reason NOT to make things easier for myself.

12-14/4 has been around for ever. The guys doing what you have come across are just to lazy to find this out.

Yeah, and when they did find out about it, it was too expensive to buy a 250' roll for what little use they had....So the suppliers stopped stocking it. I'm sure there's a supply available now-a-days. :)

Being at anti-DIY'r, therefore you aren't one yourself? Meaning you don't do any carpenter, painting, plumbing or auto repair work yourself, correct? Don't hide behind saftey or codes either for DIY electrical work!

I think macmikeman was joking around. ;) Although there is an element of truth to what he said.

Any supply house worth its weight will carry both the XX-4 and XX-2-2 NM cable. If they don't, then I wouldn't consider them a supply house worthy of supporting because they aren't keeping up with industry trends (and not so new ones as Scott mentioned that 4 conductor NM cable has been around forever.)

A DIY or HO doing their own work is frequently mentioned here and I always wanted to ask those questions.

Well, since you asked, I also am a DIY. I do my own plumbing work on occasion, however, I don't mess with boilers and gas valves and stuff like that.

We buy from one suppler that has most everything we need (except SQ D) and has good prices. They have the 12-2-2, and the inspectors here accept the re-marking of the White with Red stripe.

The SQ D supply house has both 12-2-2 and 12-4, but all their prices are high, and I can't see buying an expensive roll that we don't need often.

I have never bought a roll of 12/4. I get a cut of about 30' and keep it in the truck. Lasts for a LONG time.

Same here. I think the last cut piece I got was for doing a thermostat "switch loop" for a 240 volt baseboard heater. Could have just as easily done two 12/2's, but my spidey senses told me that is was going to be a tough fish.

We've been using 2/2 nm for a couple of years now. Keep using it more and more. Love the stuff. XX/4 mostly for heating applications.
