Re: Using neutral as a traveller on 3way switch
Wayne,
This was a "cut-and-paste" from an e-mail between Charles Miller and myself. The scenario Mr. Miller was referring to was from my original post (the 2nd one of this thread) where my 3-way circuit ran from switch box to lighting outlet to switch box. The white wire from the first switch box to the lighting outlet is NOT re-identified because it is the neutral. The white wire to the last switch box IS re-identified because it becomes a traveler. While it would make more sense to me to splice the red and black thru as travelers and re-identify that white as the RETURN from the switch, 200.7(C)(2) states that you cannot re-identify for that purpose. So my original post stands corrected.
Al,
You described my original post correctly but in my last post I stated that the correct way to do this (according to Mr. Miller and section 200.7(C)(2) ) is to splice the white wire to say the black incoming traveler at the lighting outlet and thereby re-identifying it as a traveler to the other 3-way switch making the black of that cable assembly the return to the lighting outlet.
Regards,
Phil
