Well now your asking something I can not answer you.

When I went to trade school it was part of my high school, but that was more then 25 years ago and at that time it was not state mandated.

But actually the apprentices at the company I was working at last year where going to a company sponsored state accredited trade school right at our shop, I doubt the question of HSD or GED came up.

Let me ask this Mike.

How would additional time learning social studies, grammar and history produce better electricians?

It wouldn't produce much but electricity is a trade based on math and science.

Also lots of things have changed since 25 yrs ago. Congradulations you are lucky. No one will get a Electrical Contractors License in the USA without a hsd or ged in 2008 that's for sure.

The only organization that requires a hsd or ged is the IBEW to my knowledge.

You could fill some pretty big books with all the dumb stuff I've ever said, but I just don't think this is one of them.

Sorry bout that, I just didnt think you would have written that.

Also, we are hosted on the site of the guy that has built a small empire on training and licensing electricians.
I dont know of another way to keep up with code and safety other than having some kind of control of people wiring buildings.
Sure there are some good electricians out there without a license but, they would be the exception.

HORSE HOCKY

When has anyone ever asked me for proof of a HS diploma,

Question on application

Highest level of education obtained....High School and you are in.

DOUBLE HORSE HOCKY

I know licensed electricians and a master with NO EXPIERENCE. Worked in the office of a multi trade shop, was able to say he worked for an EC. Studied and passed his test.

I am for licensing, but IMO inspections are the stopping point. The guy that got his J-mans card in 1969 and never bought an NEC since then may or may not be able to wire a single pole.

IMHO, the best start to this whole condition is "licensing" or "certifying" or in some manner requiring demonstration of the requisite ability to conduct knowledgeable inspections through some sort of exam. Just for the inspectors. Nobody else. The buck should stop right here. A competent inspector should be able to catch those serious violations upon observation of the wiring methods. Licensing such an individual would provide a way to revoke a license for improper work. The old 3 strikes, you're out deal. Just a thought.

I can't speak for the rest of the USA, but I know for a fact that this is not true in Tennessee. I got my electrical contractors license in 2005 and I was never asked if I had a high school diploma or a GED.

And for the record I have a high school and college diploma and am probably one of the dumbest members on this forum.

Prove it! Not only is that profoundly untrue, so far you've only made statements that are your opinion that you'd like us to think are fact. Things like:

"Licensing will also soon be in all states. Very soon."
and
"O believe me i know"

I not only don't believe you, but I don't think you know anything for a fact in this regard.

Hey Mike Ive worked real hard to get my license and I am proud that I have it and I can legaly work on my own but let me tell you this... I know several guys that have been in the buisness 15-20 years that have tried several times to pass but for what ever reason they cant pass it. But they are still some of the best electricians Ive seen and I would put them up against anybody. My one friend is a highly regarded project manager that runs big jobs like apartment buildings and such.. something that Ive never done another guy I know can bend rigid pipe better than anyone Ive seen and is a wiz with plc's and motor controls. When Im around these guys I feel like a neophyte even with my license. Yea licenseing is a good thing but it dosent mean your all that cause you are a better test taker than the next guy.

I agree.

Your right licensing does not mean you are all that just like a masters degree or hsd but it does to the state of attorney general in which you hold it.

In 2008 not 2005. Call your local state for verification. Either you are in a state that does not require trade school hours based on the nec for testing or if so the trade school in which you attended needs a hsd or ged for you to attend.

Mike: They may ask, but how many follow up to verify.

I know a guy that has an Electrical Engineering degree and ring to match from an almost major school, got them on line SERIOUSLY.

Lastly what did you get out of high school. I got what I wanted ME. I could not wait to get out of school. No one ever could explain the benefits to me adequately. I could now, that is explain to a knuckle head like myself

I wish I was as smart now as I was in high school. I was so above that back then.

He is a link to the electrical contractor application. Trade school, HSD or GED is not required, and I have never attended trade school.
