who's responsible

I like hot coffee though when does it become a personal responsibility?

The goal of the lawsuit was to try to right a wrong. “We knew, before the lawsuit was filed, that the temperature of the water was 190 degrees or so, and the franchise documents required that of the franchisee,” said Kenneth Wagner, an Albuquerque lawyer who represented Liebeck. Most home coffee makers produce coffee that is between 135 and 150 degrees, he added.

Nobody drinks coffee at 190 degrees. That is like engine coolant at operating tempature.

Could you imagine the safety guys head spinning if workers were handling 190 degree liquid in a flimsy paper container while wearing their street clothes while driving a forklift

It depends on how you drink my mom sips coffee scolding hot. It’s basically boiling she sips it. Her lips are like leather.

But you’re right for the general people 99% that’s extremely overkill so I’ll shut up

Sorry, I am more in to personal responsibility. Coffee is hot. Always has been. I'd bet it wasn't that lady's first time getting a McDonalds coffee either. The ideal temperature to drink coffee is 120 to 140 degrees. The brewing temp is 195 degrees. I would expect coffee to be ANYWHERE between those temps when served. The woman SPILLED the coffee. If McDonalds had poured it in her lap, I would agree.
The full context of the case showed McDonald's knew there was a problem and did nothing about it. They were irresponsible, tin eared, big corporation scum bags. The woman who was burned didn't sue MacDonalds for a million dollars, it was the jury that came up with that.
