Re: wiring in crawl space

which exact article in 334 is it? and also, are you going by the 1999 code book?

Re: wiring in crawl space

where does it say that romex has to run parallel with framing in a crawl space??

Re: wiring in crawl space

334.15 Exposed Work.
In exposed work, except as provided in 300.11(A), the cable shall be installed as specified in 334.15(A) through (C).

(A) To Follow Surface. The cable shall closely follow the surface of the building finish or of running boards.

Re: wiring in crawl space

but it doesnt say parallel with framing it says running close to building finish.

Re: wiring in crawl space

Do you know a way to closely follow the building surface without running parallel to the framing or installing a running board?

Re: wiring in crawl space

I always thought 334.15(C) applied to crawl-spaces, but I'm thinking "unfinished basement" isn't the same as "crawl space".

I've seen a lot of places pass inspection were all the crawl-space wiring was run on the bottom of floor joists. Maybe 334.15(A) is wide open to interpretation?

The NEC does make a distinction between basements and crawlspaces in 210.8 (A)(4) and (5).

I don't see how NM cable can be fastened to the bottom of joists in a crawl space and be in compliance with 334.15(A). Either it has to follow the surface of the building finish (running parallel to a joist) or be mounted on a running board.

but parallel to joists the wire is not exposed.
Pope, there comes a point where you must take a deep breath, accept the red tag, and nail up 2x4's to protect the cables and pass inspection. :D

Can you reach out and touch it without breaking a wall down? Then it's exposed.
I agree with Peter.

Re: wiring in crawl space

this is not about an inspection i just dont see where it explains well about wiring in a crawl space .

It doesn't need to explain every possible situation. 334.15 "Exposed Work" covers all the possibilities where NM cable will be run exposed.

Re: wiring in crawl space

a running board would be nailed to the bottom of the floor joist what kind of damaged could happen to the wiring in the crawl space.
