I agree that there are those types out there, I've worked around them...ughh! I'm certainly not blaming apprentices for taking j-man's work. I understand that the apprentices need jobs too.
 
Tony: I think I responded early in the thread and did not see a response to my questions, as an employer this is what I look at when hiring? Additionally appearance is important.

What are other electricians making in your area, based upon experience and time in the trade?

If you are good at your job, a professional this should soon be evident to a GOOD employer and raises SHOULD follow.

Caustiously adding this here, when I went union the open shop company I was working for told me I would only work part time. At that point I was making union scale at the open shop, but the benifits were better. I took the gamble and in 28 years have not missed a day. Good electricians in our area work, when it get's slack (3 maybe 4 times in 37 years I have been at it), union and open shop construction electricians suffer.

You are worth more to someone...just NOT the someone you are working for or in the particular arena you work in (resi./light comm.). Resi./light comm. guys are a dime a dozen (no offense, but that's the truth)...3rd year guys can do much of that type work solo or with minimal "hand holding".


How old is the oldest man in that shop?
How long has he been there?

The answer to these questions speaks volumes about your future with this company (and possibly even with other ECs that do this type of work).

There is a welath of information in the previous post, what I would do if I were you; review the post, decide if this is the profession for you, look for a contractor in your area that looks good, pays good, offers benefits, has long term employees. Put together a resume, apply for a job and tell the truth (with some icing). In the mean time take a job to pay the bills. But keep in touch with the good contractors you have applied with and keep up the education, that always impresses me.

Well according to the toothless wonders that i work with, the proper terminology is "Quadding" . I believe that "4 wheeling" went out of style with marc's suit:cool: back in 1985

here is a big part of the problem...read through this forum, see what contractors are charging.

If your boss is charging the customer $60/hr, how much can he actually pay you and still cover his overhead and make a profit?

If you want to make more money, you need to find a shop that charges more money. Simple as that.

A guy that charges $100/hr can pay you more. But, in order to charge that $100/hr, you have to produce more. It's a vicious cycle.

And, just reading celtic's post, that is basically what he is talking about. Resi/Lt commercial contractors and field guys are the bottom of the barrel so to speak. The buy in is nothing (a car and a cell phone and you are in business)

They drag down the industry and hurt guys like you.

Find a company that works on flat rate and commission. You can make $30+ without a problem.
 
I would love nothing more than to get in with a company that deals with more industrial work, motor controls, plc's and such, but how can i get my foot in the door? I would have no problem accepting less pay to learn that stuff. Hell i would even go as low as 16 if i was learning industrial wiring. I would probably even kiss a little butt if need be. I have nothing but respect for alot of you guys, with your 25$ words , fancy formulas and uncanny troubleshooting skills.

Go to www.nema.org and look at the left hand side of the home page for the link to view all jobs. Type in electrical technician, etc., etc....pack your suitcase.....make $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$.....:)

No we are getting someplace....but why sell yourself short "for less than $16" and "kissing butt"?

I don't know exactly where you are located in NJ....but think mass transit - NJT or PATH. NJT isn't that high pay scale wise, but bennies are good....PATH has good pay and bennies....both are "guaranteed 40s" (40 hr work week)
Tell me what County you're in...I can broaden your possibilities.



If anyone was offended by early posts ("dime a dozen")....think about it....really think about it.
