fwiw, and in mshio, anyone who isn't willing to get a haircut and shave and dress neatly while looking for work either has some kind of ego problem or is slow. showing up with a fresh cut, shave, and neat clothes says to the interviewer - I am willing to conform and take a reasonable effort to fit in.

Now, I am sure that there are fringe companies that do specialty work where fitting in isn't required or desired (can you say Hollywood home theater installers), and I am sure that there are those who feel that their individuality is somehow a function of their appearance and God forbid any mortal should interfere with their 1st amendment rights, but in all practicality, and for the vast majority, fitting in or at least the attempt to show that you will try to fit in, is a feather in your cap.

now, note, this is in direct opposition to the notion that a clean cut or "businesslike" avatar has anything at all to do with anything at all.

We live in a fairly conservative area. Some of our resi customers are stern southern bapist folks , because of our association with the church. Im partially bald and have hair on my chin...I get busy and lazy with my hair, and get ragged looking, holes in my t shirt, bla bla, and I've seen them look at me negatively but not say anything. I'd like to think they understand that Im just a work'n man and take it in stride, but sometimes I wonder.

So for me, "what goes around, comes around".....for me, Its, WHO do I want to work for? pretty simple KNOW where you bread is buttered....I was up at the church just last night, and the preacher ask me if I was staying busy, I told him the phones are dead, but thanks to a small handfull of clients, Im swamped, and I'm smart enough to know where it comes from.....

would you or would you not for a job

I voted "no" but I took liberties with interpreting your question. I'm taking it to ask "would I shave off my beard to get a job?", and my answer is "no."

Like most sensible people here, I think some conservative tonsorial care is important if you want to make a good impression. Heck, I would almost certainly trim my beard and get yesterday's dinner out of it if my livelihood depended on those things. :)

would you or would you not for a job

um, i got a haircut yesterday, cause it had been a month, and it needed
some tuning. i shaved this morning, cause it needed it. brushed my teeth
too!!!!!

and because i demand to be fully compensated for every inconsequential
thing i do, even if it is in my own benefit, where do i go to get my reward
for wiping my butt and brushing my teeth....? (not at the same time)

as for personal hygene being a negotiable variable, are all you holdouts
single and celibate? just wondering.......

Let's be real. Most people would cut their hair for a job. Lord knows who would hire this dude. No haircut will help him.

where as I keep my hair short and trimmed I see no problem with working alongside someone with long hair. If youve been growing your hair out for years why should you have to cut it for a job. Cant you just ponytail it. Some of the best guys I know happily call themselves modern hippies. They work thier asses off but enjoy the look they have at the same time. Heck after I knew I was hired by my current boss I dropped off my driving record to the owner in flops. I dont care what you think about my look. Take a close look at my work and attendance. Thats where ill impress you

manly man

manly man

I have worn a beard for years. My kids have never seen me clean shaven, my wife would fall down then accuse me of having a girlfriend if I shaved.

Nice haircut and a trimmed beard is a priority for service work.

I have passed up a few well paying jobs because they asked for a clean shaven person; weather for looks or the necessity of SCADA protection gear.

My distinctive beard looks better than stubble on a double chin.

If (insert politically correct religious preferencce here) wanted men clean shaven why did (insert politically correct religios preference here) make us this way.

Shaving is a excuse for those ( insert politically correct insult here)'s who cannot grow a nice beard

GOOD thing because no one would hire you otherwise

Dude, you can't seriously believe that going into an interview looking like Charlie Manson does not hurt your chances?

I am not saying that is right, or that is good, or it is how things should be ..... but it is reality.

The thing that gets me about this argument is it's facial hair. As one of the poll choices says, it will grow back. Is having your "identity" more important than having a job? I guess for some, it is.

When I go in to fix your Mom's furnace or whatever and she tells you I am one of the most polite people she's ever met,...will you say,.."NO way, he has a beard and long hair?"

Well, now you're putting the cart before the horse. If you've already proven that you're "one of the most polite people" then that's another matter entirely.

The point we are making is that the judgement is made on appearance before you ever even have a chance to prove otherwise. And in the world of service business, that can mean lost sales.
