Well, now you're putting the cart before the horse. If you've already proven that you're "one of the most polite people" then that's another matter entirely.

The point we are making is that the judgement is made on appearance before you ever even have a chance to prove otherwise. And in the world of service business, that can mean lost sales.

Exactly, once people get to love and adore you then they will look past appearances.:D

Pete has worked with me, I am sure he can verify I am often unshaved, hair out of place, have trouble keeping my shirt tucked in, but I'm sure not going to look like that for an interview with people that don't know me and will be deciding if I get the job or not and if I get the job how much money I will get.

will you guys quit bickering about facial hair and appearances already? I'm sure if Nemo knew that he absolutely needed to shave his beard in order to get the only job that was available and he needed the job bad enough or else he and his daughters would go hungry then he would choose to shave and get the job. On the other hand maybe the market or area he is in doesn't worry about that stuff as much so he may not need to worry about it as much. To each is own.

For all of you Christian religious guys. Just remember, your Lord and Savior had long hair. Would you not hire Him? Hmm? Would you? I bet you would.

By the way I'm not a religious guy, but out of respect I capitalized the appropriate letters. :)

I'm very "Old School", I have short hair that is trimmed every two weeks, I don't have any tatoos, piercings,or have a beard. I will not tuck my shirt in
because I look like a dork if I do. Since moving to Cali I have worked
with a few long-hair tatooed guys that were pretty smart and are very good
electricians. I personally don't judge a book by the cover, but in 25 years
of service experience I've learned that customers do. It is what it is.

I hear you,and tend to agree with your reference, but unfortunately there is a massive part of our population that doesnt think that way. Somewhere down through time, society thinks that "cleanly-ness is next to Godly-ness". And I think that phrase was intended for what's on the inside, not the outside.

I have no idea how you present yourself but I have been around this world long enough that people are predisposed to judge based on appearance thats just the way it is.

I was raised right. I know how to present myself. I guess luckily enough for myself, I am from a small town. Word travels VERY fast.

Presentation is thee utmost important note on a new job, but it has nothing to do with looks, (for the most part). So what, I have long hair and a beard? You going to get a restraining order????

That is a very profound statement. I like it.

Iwire is right that you only get one chance to make a first impression. If you are not neatly groomed for a job interview you probably don't want the job real bad. I am more concerned about my appearence now that I work for myself. I go to job interviews almost every day. The long haired guy with the tats and the nose jewlery may be as good of an electrician as I am but I'll probably get hired before he does. Fair?? No. Reality?? Yes.

Nemo you can argue till your butt falls off but facts are facts and a service job would be difficult to land.

As you stated you live in a small town you get a pass.

Is it right that you are judged by your looks, NO.

BUT

Are those of us telling you are wrong correct ,OF COURSE we are.

A bit incomplete, in truth you will be drawn to those same type of customers. The long haired person, or has jewlery or tats will be drawn to his same type of customers....

Here's the thing guys. It doesn't matter a darned thing what our personal opinions are on the matter of appearance. If I'm a business owner and I'm sending people out to do service work in people's homes, they are going to get judged based on their appearance and there's nothing I can do about that. Therefore, if I was in that position I would have to make and enforce an "appearance policy" and enforce it. A business owner can't afford to lose customers because his customers might not even let his employee in the door. That's just how it is....I see this strictly from a business perspective.

Your correct IMO,...... going out on a limb here, IMO, clean cut people
"on the average" I repeat "on the average" are more disciplined and therefore will be the dominant typical customer that has the funds to pay you....

Brian, geez. How about you take the clean cut guy who beats his wife for help?

You give me two minutes with a customer, and I am in and welcomed.

I know how to deal with customers, and that's all it takes.

I think it's clear that for service work you pretty much need to be clean cut. But possibly for larger commercial work or new residential work you can escape the customers strange looks or thoughts about you being Un-clean cut. :)

There. Can we pretty much agree on that and move on?

But if I am hiring (and getting a job is what this thread is about) and I have two equally qualified applicants for a job why should I take a chance on the guy that is visibly a non-conformist?
