When it comes to doing electrical work in Ogdensburg, NY it may be a little different than working in many other parts of the country.

I had never herd of Ogdensburg and had to look it up but it appears to be a small rather rural community of 12K people. I do have experience in rural communities from my earlier years and I can tell from experience that in a small close knit community that a clean shave and short hair may not have the effect that it does in a larger metro area.

If you are from a small rural community the best thing that you can have going for you is to actually be from there. People tend to be more distrustful of strangers and trying to look sophisticated may do more harm than good. You want to dress, act and speak in a manner that is accepted by the local residents and if you don't then you become one of them ( a fast talking city slicker ) and that's not a good idea.

So before getting Nemo all spruced up to work in the city it would be a good idea to find out what's acceptable at the local level. Grizzly Adams may be the local idea of a well dressed man. Dress codes are nothing but fads anyway. Geroge Washington was clean shaven and by the time Abe Lincoln took office you couldn't grow enough whiskers. When Rutherford B. Hayes pushed the envelope on facial hair the other politicians decided they couldn't keep up and started shaving again.

My uncle use to tell a story about a friend of his that retired to a small town in Maine after 30 years in a small town they still referred to him as the new guy down the street.

I have one of my men who is a life long resident and several times I would give him an address and he would say thats my uncle or cousin or some other relation.

How much do you guys pay for haircuts?

I bought a pair of Wahl trimmers about six years ago for $30.

I haven't paid for a haircut since.

I take my head down to #2 every two weeks

Same here. Though my little 8 year old girl says I should go to a "stylist".

I can't see paying for a "buzz cut".

why do people, especially some men get so worked up over cutting their hair for work? Why do tradesmen think they are exempt from looking presentable? But if the guy is a good worker and produces for me I would be willing to let him slide. some people are just rebels but if they work, that's more important in my eyes, withing reason of course.

I used to play in a band and had some fairly long hair when I was younger. I remember having a helper that had short hair and was clean shaven. Customers would regularly assume that he was the lead mechanic on the job, and that I was the helper. It used to make me mad as hell, but it's just human nature to make these types of assumptions.

I don't pay anything for haircuts these days, but I do pay for fresh razors pretty often.:D

I voted yes.

I cut my ponytail for my present job - residential service. Didn't like it, but I did.

Right, being employed should take precedence over one's personal appearance, and I don't think anyone in this day and age is in a position to be picky about that.

I'm the same way. Exept I've been doing that for about 10 years now. And I've never understood the guard numbers. Mine don't have numbers. I take mine down to a quarter inch.

Well first off I think he was a carpenter not an electrician. :D

Beyond that I am pretty sure that is someone shows up for an interview where I work with long hair, a beard and wearing only a robe and sandals we will not be hiring him. :D
He may have been a carpenter, but if what the book says is true then he could easily do electrical work as well. No problem for him.

Before you get a chance to hire him he needs to comply with OSHA work requirements for dress.

Quick joke: A boy was getting ready to turn 16 and asked his parents if they would get him a car for his birthday. His dad told him that if he kept his grades up, did all of his chores without asking, and got a haircut, they would consider it. A few months later when it was almost his birthday, the son came up to his dad and said, "Ok, I have kept my grades up and even raised my math and english from a B to an A. I clean my room twice a week and take out the trash every night and I have started helping mom with the laundry on the weekends. Can we talk about a car norw?" His dad said, "You have done a very good job, but you still haven't cut your hair like we asked." "But dad, Jesus had long hair, and nobody ever says anything about that." To which his dad replied, "That's right, son. And if you read your bible you'll see that Jesus walked everywhere he went, too." ;)

That being said, I think it is extremely important to make the right impression on an interview. If I was going for an interview a hair cut would be a top priority. If I still had my longer hair, I would not necessarily chop it off for the sake of an interview. Nor would I not hire somebody if they came in with long hair, but a presentable appearence goes beyond the length of the hair. I voted for the haircut, BTW.

The boss sent two of his kids to work for me one summer on a high rise building. They both had long blonde hair. I had them cleaning up some trash around the construction trailer and we had an old RANCHARO to haul stuff around the jobsite! They were using it and one of them left it in neutral and it rolled down into this shallow lake on the job!!! They thought it was a big joke!!! That old truck was handy--better than carrying materials to the building!!! For a punishment i took them down to the local barber shop and bought them "regular haircuts"!!! Next day my boss called and he was very happy about it----his wife never talked to me again!!!!
