I'm not in total disagreement, but I was wondering: what authority requires the acronym for ground fault circuit interrupter be GFCI?... To be clear, however, the correct term is "GFCI," not "GFI."
No. 210.8. To be clear, however, the correct term (acronym) is "GFCI," not "GFI."

Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI). A device intended
for the protection of personnel that functions to deenergize
a circuit or portion thereof within an established
period of time when a current to ground exceeds the values
established for a Class A device.
I wouldn't call it an acronym. How do you say GFCI as a word?

"jiff see"
People are lazy and like to take short cuts with anything and everything . Even lazy enough that it is too much work to include the "C" in GFCI. Many people also call AFCI - "AFI". Maybe the Chinese with their complex language symbols is not as dumb as some think, then again maybe they have problems with people wanting to take shortcuts too

Acronyms and initialisms are abbreviations formed from the initial components in a phrase or a word. These components may be individual letters (as in CEO) or parts of words (as in Benelux and Ameslan). There is no universal agreement on the precise definition of the various terms (see nomenclature) nor on written usage (see orthographic styling). In English and most other languages, such abbreviations have historically had limited use, but their coinage and use became much more common in the 20th century. As a type of word formation process, acronyms and initialisms are viewed as a subtype of blending.
