Range plug

I'm curious.

What does the electronics that produce the spark to ground have anything to do with affecting the operation of a GFCI ?

JAP>
I’ve had to change out several because of this issue. Didn’t bother to troubleshoot why. I’m out there trying to make some $$$ and not spend my time on figuring why it’s tripping. I’ve also had this issue with fluorescent lights that a HO tapped of his bathroom GFCI receptacle.

I think we need more clarification from the OP as to what, exactly he is calling a “range”. Is it a cooktop? Is it a range-oven? Is it a wall oven with a warming drawer? Several responses seem to fit any of these scenarios.

So you changed out a lot of what?

Igniters or the required GFI ?

The GFI. It wasn’t required way back when. If I were wiring a new house today I would make sure that I had the ability to remove that receptacle from a GFI protected circuit if the spark module was causing a problem. Just curious, what would you do? Tell the HO they had to keep getting new ranges delivered until they got one that didn’ trip the GFI?

This shouldn’t become OUR problem as electricians. The onus should be on the manufacturer.

So, lockable by 110.25 means that we put lockouts on it to work on it, carrying the key with us so no one can trip it back 9n while we are working? Like the UK lock out procedures?

What code states you need a GFCI for gas range receptacle? I think you thinking if its with in 6’ from the edge of the sink, it needs GFCI protection but I don’t think so if not.

Yes to that and I thought the 2017 code (which I don't have because I'm not on it) required all residential kitchen receptacles to be GFI in addition to AFCI protected.

If the receptacle location did required a gfi protected outlet I guess I'd have to tell them just that.

And how would you go about doing that, if a GFI protected outlet was required to be there in the first place?

I will try to be as clear as I possibly can regarding this and I hope I don’t come across in a sarcastic manner. I would venture to say that the VAST majority of EC’s here in the forum are in business to make $$$. We are not here to pay homage to the NEC bible but we look to that bible as our guide. But, the actual Bible tells us that we are ALL sinners.

Having said that, I will always follow the rules of the NEC and if a GFCI-AFCI protected circuit is required I will install it. By the same token, if an igniter is causing a problem with that circuit I will commit a sin and remove the range-cooktop from that circuit in order to allow the job to progress and collect my $$$. It’s the manufacturer’s problem (of either the range or the protection device) and not mine or my customers.

For all of those who do not agree with me “Let he among you cast the first stone.”:happyyes:

Preach it, reverend Goldstar!

But seriously, I wholeheartedly agree that I work to get paid, not pay homage to a law book, and agree that a misfiring range igniter is nobody's problem but the manufacturer, and will unplug any appliance that is the cause of an afci or gfci tripping problem. I guarantee my work 100% for a year, and can prove whether I am or am not at fault, and for retail customers will be extremely lenient with this...I'm also NOT in business to attempt to show the light to those who won't see.

I guess I'll cast it then, cause, if one would do that in that instance, more than likely they'd do it in other instances also just to collect.

Now,,,,Your sins have been forgiven until your next offense,,,,, go say an Our Father and 3 Hail Mary's.

Are you stating that you have NEVER committed an NEC sin? :jawdrop: I guess you’ll be at St. Peter’s right hand judging me and others when that time comes. ;)
