Taped Wirenuts

I twist them together either by hand or when necessary with my linesman pliers, than screw on the wirenut. I sometimes wrap tape around the wire & wirenut too where vibration may cause them to come loose. As for waterproofing the connections,if the joint is large enough I'll apply mastic and tape, otherwise I use those wirenuts with the silicone seal by Ideal.

When I see tape on wirenuts, that screams out to me, "A handyman was here". That said, the instructions for some fixtures specifically say to tape up your wire nuts.

Your little German exclamation below your posts is about as funny a thing as I've read in a long long while. I've got tears running down my face.

Thanks for easing the pain of the possibility of being the only one that uses that method. I twist 'em with linesman, cut 'em clean, and tape from the nut head down to at least an inch below the nut itself. You are also talking to a "Monk", who normally will use canned air to blow out a JB or panel before the cover is installed. It's called OCD. Most don't like working with me, if I don't like what I see, I won't mind telling you. Most of the time they think it is PMS. As ugly as I am, if I was anything other than male, they should of buried me alive after delivery:D

I make my wirenut connections the same way.

Yeah , I've been diagnosed with it too. It really gets to my wife. The others at work usually just ignore me & call me a neat freak. I must say that if you carry canned air just to blow out the JB's before closing 'em up,you've obviously got it worse than me.That is obsessive compulsive.
Good luck.

The worst part is when you need to make a change or add something to the circuit, and it's neccessary to untape the wirenuts. If it's existing work and it's been taped up for a period of time, it's just a sticky mess. I hate it, and I curse the guy that was there before me. Tape is unneccessary, and it's a nuisance, and I think it's poor workmanship.

I agree, but take note of this instruction below. It would be a 110.3(B) violation, I would think, to not tape them in the face of such an instruction:

OH.........your one of those guys.............

I always told my apprentices 'tape is for homeowners'.

I will admit when we have open splices on temp wiring (as allowed by the NEC) I will tape the wire nuts.

Wasn't taping up switches and receptacles a requirement of the CES SIMS manual:rolleyes:

Maybe that that was their undoing, lost profits do to excessive tape use and wasted labor:grin:

If you're so anti-tape,how do you seal up split bolt splices or tap/splice blocks without mastic and or tape ?

Carl

I think it had more to do with the "new math" they used in the accounting department. ;)

I agree that if you use the proper size wire nut and install it properly there is no need to tape wire nuts, and in a normal junction box I do not tape.

However I always tape my wirenuts in motor dog houses, I never really thought about why other than that was the way I was taught and have always done it that way. Vibration in a motor could cause an issue maybe

I don't know, maybe I'll stop!

grounds up, tape motor connections, twist wires with your pliers before installing wire nut, make sure your screws are all perfectly straight up and down, sometimes we just do things ........... because???????

Normally just use a set of good lungs. You get a whole lot of rock work done, and I have three cans of compressed I carry with me. Yes, obsessive compulsive=OCD. Been blamed many o' times, and poked fun at countless times. I don't think you can go "too far" as far as workmanship. I never had a mop in the switchgear room:grin:

Ahhh, you've mentioned it (mopping the switchgear room) so that would imply that you've thought about doing just that though ... tsk, tsk, don't let the OCD monster have his way ... resist the temptation, resist the temptation .... it's OK .... :D

No, actually I thought of bringing in a pressure washer to get it super clean:D

I know I don't run or use my day as to what Code violation I can violate.

I know I do manage daily to apply an array of applications that are code compliant.

The use of wire nut assures a mechanical connection. The electrician is to assure a mechanical connection in the course of there work, and protect the wire, and thus provide some compliance forthwith.

I've lost a point on not using tape.

ooops thought this was a PM ... delete, delete, darn

Ya' know, it's OK to debate amongst friends as long as there is no safety issue. As I said in another post, scrambled or sunny side up?

I love any debates. 'Cause either one or thee other is wrong, or we have a good discussion going:wink:
