How do you 'make up' a dead end?
No. The 14 is just made up in the box. The 12 is on the bath circuit, protected by the GFI and goes to the shower light.
not sure, but isn't this a vioation ?- 3 -14/2 and 2 -12/2, unless I'm missing something ?
I figure the best way to teach homeowners about the value of a "plan" is to put the light outlet exactly where they ask for it. Take it out later and charge them for a change. Why do extra work so that they can continue to not use a competent architect? Notice I said competent.
not if it is a two gang box. looks like a heat fan light and a bar light switch setup?
The 14 is just made up. One in and one out. No switch, no receptacle, no device. Nothing attachted to the 14. It is just made up in the box. It does not go to any device. It's spliced together and nothing more. It does nothing in that box but go through it. That box has nothing to do with the vanity, nor the bathroom at all.
Good so far?
Now, the 12 is protected by the bath GFI and is for a switch for the light in the shower.
It's still spliced within the box, so each conductor will count. see 314.16(B)(1)
4-#14's =8
4-#12's =9
one device =2
so that box would have to be 19cu. inches or larger
5 12s (4 ccc and one ground) x 2.25 = 11.75
4 14s x 2.00 = 8.00
2 x 2.25 (for device) = 4.50
Total = 23.75
Why do we care about CCC when calculating box fill?
4x12/2 = 8*2.25 = 18
4*14/2 = 8*2.00 = 16
EGC = 1 #12 = 2.25
18+16+2.25 = 36.25
....PLUS the device [2*2.25 = 4.5]
36.25+4.5= 40.75
40.75 cu.in. is what I have here...good luck on the box.
I think you have doubled some of the numbers. I believe he means 4 12awg conductors not 4 12/2's and 4 14 awg conductors not 4 14/2's. At least that is what it looks like in the pivture to me. I am getting the same number that he did.

Just abandon the 'load' side of wherever you end up placing the box(es).
Isn't that 14 romex for the vanity? Is there a vanity switch?
...but that still doesn't address why we care if the conductors are CCC or not
We don't care, but in this case all conductors except the egc's are CCC so it doesn't matter.
But, if they are inside the box, they still count toward its conductor fill.Th 14 in that box has absolutely NOTHING to do with the bathroom. Not the vanity light. Not the fart fan. Not the can light in the shower. Not the can lights over the whirlypool. Nothing. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zero. Goose Eggs.
