TAPE Or NO TAPE

TAPE Or NO TAPE

I agree that if the splice is done right no need for tape. Considering the condition of the insulation on the wire, tape may aid in arcing, but then again if this be the case isn't this what we want the circuit to do and trip so the conductor can be replaced? All in all most of the splices I see with tape the tape has come loose enough to serve no function.

I've always found that there is nothing out there that can do without tape. As a matter of fact, while at a Superbowl party, my friend's daughter duct taped her Superbowl banner that she made, to the wall.

When in doubt, a few wraps of tape will help.

taping wire nuts.

No don't tape your wire nuts, it hides a bad conection even more. Read the instruction on wires nuts and use them as listed and lableled. They will tell you how many wires and what gage wire is allowd, how far to strip the wire, and how to cut the end of the splice to make it go on a wire nut. It even tells you how mutch to tourqe the wire nut on for a good conection. Its funny how it took me 20 years to read the instruction on the bag.

I always check my wirenuts by gently pulling on the wires to make sure the connection is good. And how many electricians, handymen, homeowners know about connecting a solid wire to a braided wire with a wirenut?

I believe practice of taping wire nuts goes back to a time when the throat or the wire nut was shorter and may not sufficiently cover the connection. Eventually the tape will come off anyway.
With todays wire nuts taping would be a waste of time.
And of course, a well made connection would not require tape.

In Hungary - where I grew up - wirenuts were not known. Twist-and-tape. 220V to boot...

I started up a number of machines in both China and Mexico. Neither had wire nuts. They both used a knot to connect two stranded wires together, covered with tape. It was about impossible to get the knot apart. Far more secure than anything but a crimped on wire nut.

The Chinese did not even have tape with adhesive on it.

They need to be introduced to The Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company.

would you care to provide a knot example ?

(I'm guessing it wasn't any of these: http://www.animatedknots.com/waterknotrescue/index.php?LogoImage=LogoGrog.jpg&Website=www.animatedknots.com
